The Peter Gracey “This is Jamaica” Poetry Scholarship
The Scholarship
The Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill in collaboration with the Hon. Peter Gracey and Oliver Samuels with the support of JDTAN is committed to promoting literacy. This scholarship was created for students to explore poetry as an educational building block. We hope to inspire and motivate students to express themselves freely through poetry created by Peter Gracey.
Scholarship Amount: US $1000.00 broken up in 3 tiers. First, second and third place.
Eligibility: Applicants between the ages of 6 and 18 attending a primary or high school in Jamaica.
How to Apply
Step 1 – Submit Application via the link above
Step 2 – Video Record a Reciting of the poem “This is Jamaica” written by Peter Gracey (poem below.) Poem must be recited using the opening statement “This is Jamaica” by Peter Gracey. Poem must be recited in 120 seconds or less.
Step 3. Email the video via free upload through wetransfer.com or sendspace.com to poetryscholarship@jdtan.org. Only submissions from students who have submitted applications (above) will be reviewed.
All entries must be received by September 24th 2021.

By submitting an application, we are granting permission to send applicants information regarding their application only, via their submitted email address.
No applicants will be contacted regarding anything other than their application or the business of Peter Gracey This is Jamaica Scholarship and his affiliates and The Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill (FL), Kiwanis International, JDTAN, and Real Credit Deal.
The winner will grant JDTAN, Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill (FL), Kiwanis International, JDTAN and Peter Gracey permission to post their name, school, photo, and their poem on their respective websites, or in other marketing communications relating to the scholarship program.
Applicant’s emails will not be used for any marketing purposes. JDTAN, Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill (FL), Kiwanis International, JDTAN, and its representatives will not knowingly sell, share, rent or otherwise transfer your information other than in accordance with the terms set forth in this Privacy Policy.
Terms & Conditions
Only one submission may be entered per student. Duplicate entries will be disqualified. By submitting an application to the This is Jamaica Poetry Scholarship, you certify that all the information you have provided was done and performed by you, and the information you provide to JDTAN, Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill (FL), Kiwanis International is accurate.
Applicants shall fully indemnify, hold harmless and defend JDTAN, Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill (FL), Kiwanis International, Real Credit Deal and its directors, officers, employees, agents, stockholders, and Affiliates from and against all claims, demands, actions, suits, damages, liabilities, losses, settlements, judgments, costs and expenses (including but not limited to reasonable attorney’s fees and costs), whether or not involving a third party claim, which arises out of or relates to any act or omission of the applicant.
As outlined in the Privacy Policy, JDTAN, Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill (FL), Kiwanis International, JDTAN, its agents and/or representatives have permission to:
- Use their name, photo, poem, response, and award amount, if any, in announcements or articles (i.e. social media, newsletter, etc) issued by JDTAN, Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill (FL), Kiwanis International &JDTAN
- Post the applicant’s name, high school, college or university, and the poem on the respective websites.
- Email information to the applicant regarding their application.
- Winners will be notified via email, and announced publicly, as well as on the respective social media pages and website.
